October 2016 Wallpaper

1680x1050-oct-2016

Happy Autumn.   For this month’s image I stuck my hand into the October archives and by chance this decade-old image popped out.   I don’t know if we’ll have good color this year with the drought and all.  We may need to travel to locations like this (Addison, Vermont) to get our color fix for the year…  I hope you have a great autumn season!

Technical: Canon 1D Mk2, 70-200mm f/2.8L at 73mm; 1/250 @ f/8, ISO 200.  Processed with Lightroom CC.  Started with some small overall exposure tweaks: -0.3EV and brought down the highlights and black clipping -15 which created a solid tonal base. Added a general strong contrast curve.  The foreground grass was reflecting pretty strongly, so I pulled the greens down -11 and then added a GND filter which further pulled the foreground down (-0.4EV, h-10) into a comfortable range.

September 2016 Wallpaper

September 2016 Wallpaper

I had planned on publishing this along with a travelogue of our recent trip to Aziscohos Lake, but that’s taking longer than I had hoped, coupled with holidays and crazy schedules and work commitments… September is almost halfway gone (a terrifying realization as it is!)

This is a photograph taken a few weeks ago of Twin Brook, Aziscohos Lake, Maine which was nestled into an inlet along the side of the lake.

Technical: Fujifilm X-T1,XF10-24mm F4 R OIS at 10mm; 1/3 sec at f/8.0, ISO 200. Processed with Lightroom CC: more or less straight out of camera (dragged the highlights down to deal with the untimely sunshine)

August 2016 Wallpaper

August 2016 Wallpaper

We’re in the middle of a pretty severe drought here in Massachusetts (and central MA is ground zero) so most of the plants in the area are struggling and I’m hard-pressed to find a new photograph for this year.  August is also when we take our annual kayaking trip somewhere far away from there, so I thought I’d go with a photograph from August of last year at Lobster Lake in Maine.  (For 2016 we’re returning to a remote site on Aziscohos Lake and hoping for good weather and maybe an aurora to compliment the waning moon!)

This particular image was difficult to crop into the 3 different versions below – there are major differences between them, so I hope you enjoy the one you use!  I’m actually very fond of a black & white version of this photograph, but decided it might not be what people are looking for on their computer screens…

Technical: Fujifilm X-T1, XF 55-200 f/3.5 at 200mm, 1/1600 at f/7.1, ISO 400; probably on a tripod (I don’t think we were on the water yet when I took this). Processed with Lightroom CC: just some simple contrast tweaks – the scene did most of the heavy lifting (as it should be).

July 2016 Wallpaper

July 2016 Wallpaper

A photograph from July 2008 when I spent many a warm evening photographing osprey at the Assabet headwaters in Westborough.  This photo has something both subtle and amazing every time I see it: the water lily is literally indented into the water with surface tension inconceivably not broken.  Considering this is in the middle of a large body of water is a bit of a testament to how still it must have been that evening in July…

June 2016 Wallpaper

June 2016 Wallpaper

I spent an hour untangling our local scourge vine, Asiatic Bittersweet, from two of our Rhododendrons which had just started to bloom the past week — so I thought it might be appropriate to use them as the June image.  It was a calm, cloudy afternoon so the lighting was flat and subjects were still.  Of course, in the 10 minutes I took to fetch the camera a breeze started to kick up – but fortunately it abated from time to time so I could get some nice exposures.
