Another late wallpaper… I wanted to capture the flowers that are popping up this rather slow arriving Spring and couldn’t find anything until yesterday (in addition to being tied up doing taxes and other things… Sigh!)

I opted for a backlit version of the crocus flowers (croci?) versus the more conventional approach (below).

35 years ago we endured the Blizzard of ’78. One day after that storm our daughter was born. We kinda remember that storm.

January 2013 Wallpaper

January 2013 marks my 4th anniversary of my monthly wallpapers. I hope you continue to enjoy the little slices of nature I dig up each month and wish everyone a Happy New Year.

The recent snow we’ve had here at the turn of the year inspired me to find a slightly more picturesque January — this image was taken in January 2008. It is the Assabet River as it transitions from Acton to Concord (there’s a town line somewhere in there, I think…)

Technical: Canon 1D Mark II, 24-70mm f/2.8 at 70mm. 1/13s at f/11, ISO 200. Filtering unrecorded. Processed with Lightroom 4. There was a lot of tonal compression applied here — too many tweaks to detail. The two most important were a selective mask of the river where I lowered the exposure by 1/3 stop and added clarity — effectively reproducing what a polarizer would do. The second biggest push was to move the highlights down to recover some detail in the snowbank. (I actually had the image ready to go without that and upon a third look decided something needed to be done there!)

December 2012 Wallpaper

December has arrived with a few foggy mornings, which got me to digging through the catalog for an image that captured that kind of feel you get when snow and fog come together. I found this 2007 image of Elizabeth Brook in Stow that has never been published before (although a similar one earlier in the series has been part of an exhibit on the Assabet River).

Technical: Canon 40D, 24-70mm f/2.8L at f/11, 1/125 second at ISO 200. Processed with Lightroom 4, mostly contrast enhancements, e.g., a 3/4 stop graduated ND filter was applied to the upper right quadrant, a touch of negative clarity (-19) restored the atmospheric effect that the contrast tweaks took away.

Maynard Christmas Parade 2012

Nothing says small town ‘merica like a parade and right on the heels of Saturday’s Sip and Stroll event on Saturday night was Sunday afternoon’s 46th Annual Christmas Parade down Main Street in Maynard. For a few minute it looked like I’d have the perfect light for the second half of the parade, but the clouds stayed — which was almost as good (the best light is when the 4pm winter sun floods down Main Street on the parade’s return route… just magic).

Technical: Canon 5D Mark II, mostly 70-200mm f/2.8L (a few 24-70 shots in there), handheld. Minimally processed with Lightroom 4 (exposure tweaks, clarity +18, vibrance +25)

Downtown Maynard Holiday Sip and Stroll

I was asked by my friends in the Maynard Business Alliance to take some pictures at their first Sip and Stroll event on Saturday evening, December 1st. A light snow had fallen all day lending just the right amount of a wintery backdrop — but without the shoveling and snow piles! By all accounts the event was a great success and my biggest issue was getting good photographs of some of the businesses because the crowds were too heavy at times and I just didn’t get to all of them (sorry!)

Technical: All photos taken with a Canon 5D Mark II, various lenses mounted on my Gitzo tripod. Exposures, ISOs all varied widely and there are a few HDR images in here as well (they have the _enfuse suffix in the file name in case you are curious). All images processed in Lightroom 4.

November 2012 Wallpaper

This was taken in November a few years ago on the Assabet River in Stow. The primary challenge was trying to compose this scene while the kayak was being pushed by a fairly moderate current. My Lightroom catalog has about 20+ versions of this photograph as I struggled to put all of the pieces together.

Capturing a Hurricane

We had a pretty nasty storm here the past day or so (the outer edge of Hurricane Sandy). As the daylight was fading the winds and rain began in earnest I found myself wanting to somehow capture the forces at play. We don’t have waves crashing over a seawall, but the trees were swaying and the rain was horizontal so I hoped I could somehow use those elements in the image – a mixture of the stationary and moving. I can’t say I was thrilled with the results, but they do convey a bit of the power of the storm in our tiny little corner of the world.

Technical: Canon 7D, ISO 100, 24-70mm f/2.8L at 28mm, f/5-ish, ND and GND filters. Exposures vary: 1st is 8/10 sec, others are 10-13 seconds. Processed in Lightroom 4, mostly contrast manipulation.
