July 2016 Wallpaper

A photograph from July 2008 when I spent many a warm evening photographing osprey at the Assabet headwaters in Westborough.  This photo has something both subtle and amazing every time I see it: the water lily is literally indented into the water with surface tension inconceivably not broken.  Considering this is in the middle of a large body of water is a bit of a testament to how still it must have been that evening in July…

April 2015 Wallpaper

April 2015 Wallpaper

We’re still waiting for Spring to arrive here in the Northeast. We’ve had a few tantalizing hours here and there, but this is definitely the tail of a very long winter (today’s 10-day forecast actually has contiguous days of over 60 degrees). Consequently the signs of Spring are few and far between so I went to the archives for an April photograph.. It’s nice to know that scenes like this should start to be commonplace in a few weeks.

May 2011 Wallpaper

May 2011 Wallpaper

I had another image in mind for May (and if I used that I would have posted May’s image on time), but I saw the bleeding hearts exploding pink by the river in our yard and I knew that was going to be a better subject — but it took a couple of days to find the time and light.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Technical stuff:
Canon 5D Mark II, 100mm Macro, 1/320 second, f/5.6, ISO 2500. Polarizing filter.  High shutter speed was needed to compensate for the light breeze.  A reflector was set up to the left to direct a bit more of the sun’s light on the flowers.
Processed in Lightroom 3, exposure +1/2 stop, black +19, vibrance +5, clarity +25, sharpening. (plus a bit of dust spotting.)
