Venus-Jupiter Conjunction

Tonight something very unusual happened.  No, not the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in the southwest sky…  What was unusual  was that there was an astronomical event and it wasn’t cloudy.  I have a pretty bad record with these things and the hope that I can observe things like this was beaten out of me years ago.

But, every once in a while Nature throws you a bone.

That’s Venus below and Jupiter above.   In a couple of nights the crescent moon will be in the vicinity. It’ll be a far better photograph than this.  It’s also a sure sign it will be raining here.

Venus is below and Jupiter is above.  Wow.  Think about it – you are looking first towards the sun at Venus (94 million miles) and then clear across the solar system to Jupiter (539 million miles).  What a show!

Light as a feather

We had a party here over the weekend (a baby shower for our daughter combined with a family picnic) and pretty much the week beforehand was spent getting the yard and house ready.   I was working in the backyard, literally covered in dirt and sweat, happened to look up, and saw the biggest downy feather I’ve ever seen.

Dirty, sweaty guy aiming his camera at the sky — yeah, I’m sure my neighbors think I’m nuts.

Lunar Eclipse

Like a zillion other photographers I stood out in the winter night air and aimed my cameras skyward for the total lunar eclipse. I’m sure there’s a handful of folks who did their shooting with a nice equatorial mount and are Photoshopping their HDR captures as I type this. Me, I just pointed the camera and winged some exposures. (Not that I would be in the latter camp if I had the equipment….)
