April 2018 Wallpaper

Well Spring is almost here in Central Massachusetts…  The ice is melting and the rivers and streams are flowing.   It’s a nice time to travel around the backroads and find those hidden treasures nestled in the landscape before they are obscured by the foliage.

This abstract image of the Assabet River was taken in 2010.

March 2018 Wallpaper

Mar 2018 Wallpaper

Well another late wallpaper, but I sort of have an excuse…  We had a series of snowstorms here in the Northeast and during the second one we lost our internet connection for nearly a week (shoutout to Verizon for getting it fixed when we were one in a sea of thousands that had outages).   So I had this ready to go but had a backlog of real work to plow through first.   My apologies.

I think I’ve mentioned this before…  For some reason I have very few photographs taken in March.  This one came from a trip up and down the east coast in 2009: Sunrise on Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina.

There’s about 2 feet of snow outside our windows right now, but we know that Spring is coming!

February 2018 Wallpaper

You may have seen this photo on my Instagram feed.  I mentioned that we had found a waterfall nearby.  I realized afterwards that the photograph gave the impression that this bit of falling water was the waterfall….  Oh no….

A few weeks ago Betsy and I were taking a short hike in the land behind our home in Fitchburg (we share a border with some power lines and then Cogshall Park).  Back in the fall I had ventured over to a section with Cayla (our grand-daughter) but it dropped into a steep ravine and I thought it might be a bit much for her.

I knew there was a stream at the bottom so we thought it would be nice to see it.  Indeed there is a wonderful brook running through the woods.

Downstream would head into private property and, eventually, Route 2.  So we headed upstream.

And we were greeted by a 40-50 foot waterfall!

While it is rather difficult to get to, suffice it to say that I’ll be exploring this jewel in my “backyard” quite a bit in the coming months…   Indeed these photos were taken about a week after the “discovery” when we had a bit of snow falling.

December 2017 Wallpaper

Winter, so far this year, is coming in like a lamb with crisp mornings vs. snowy storms.  Best wishes to everyone for a happy and safe holiday season.

November 2017 Wallpaper

We were on vacation the first week of November in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  We visited 5 National Wildlife Refuges (and could have easily added another 3 or 4 if we had the time).   While, sadly, the migrating birds had yet to arrive we enjoyed the bears at Alligator River NWR and this peaceful sunset at Pea Island NWR.

(As long as I have your attention…  Our National Wildlife Refuge system is currently under attack by the current congress and administration.  Please consider supporting organizations like the National Wildlife Refuge Association, League of Conservation Voters, and others that are trying to give a voice to these precious national (and global) assets.)
